About Rosebud

Rosebud is the main town on the bay side of the southern Peninsula, between McCrae to the east and Capel Sound and Tootgarook to the west. It is named after a local shipwreck. Visit Mornington Peninsula puts it about an hour and 15 minutes' drive from Melbourne, or 90 kilometres. The shops run for about two kilometres, with the beach right across the road.

Rosebud Pier reaches about 300 metres into the bay and is a popular spot for fishing. The foreshore is lined with old coastal banksias, with shaded picnic areas, barbecues and a big playground near the pier. In the warmer months the foreshore campground fills with families, as it has for generations.

The beach and the Bay Trail

Rosebud Beach runs for about nine kilometres and is sheltered by sandbars offshore, so the water is usually calm and shallow, which suits young children. Beachsafe rates it 1 out of 10 for hazard. The Rosebud and McCrae life saving clubs patrol on weekends and public holidays over summer, and there is accessible beach matting beside the jetty every day from November to May.

The Bay Trail, a 28 kilometre path for walking and cycling from Safety Beach to Portsea, runs along the foreshore through town.
