Sorrento and Portsea

Sorrento and Portsea sit right at the end of the Mornington Peninsula, about an hour and a half's drive from Melbourne. The two towns are only a few minutes apart. Sorrento has the shops, cafes and bakeries along Ocean Beach Road, and Portsea is quieter, with its pier, the pub and big gardens behind tall hedges.

The best thing about staying down here is having two kinds of beach. The front beaches face Port Phillip Bay, with calm water, jetties and sunsets. The back beaches face the ocean, with surf, rock pools and the coastal walk along the cliffs. On a hot day the bay is the place to swim. Back beaches have strong rips, so stick to the patrolled areas.

Things to do

Walk or ride out to Point Nepean National Park at the very tip, where you can explore the old fort and quarantine station. The car ferry from Sorrento crosses the bay to Queenscliff in about 40 minutes, which makes an easy day trip. Peninsula Hot Springs and the Red Hill cellar doors are both within about half an hour.

Summer is the season here, and the towns are at their busiest from Christmas to the end of January. Portsea Polo is on Saturday 13 February 2027 at Point Nepean. If you can come outside school holidays, February and March are often the nicest months, with warm water and fewer people.

Questions guests ask

How long is the drive from Melbourne to Sorrento?
About an hour and a half from the Melbourne CBD in normal traffic. Allow more on a Friday afternoon in summer.
Which beach is best for kids in Sorrento?
The front (bay) beach. The water is calm and shallow near the shore. The back (ocean) beach has surf and rips, so it is better for walks and rock pools than for young swimmers.
Do your Sorrento homes have pools?
Several do, including heated pools. Each home's page lists its pool and whether it is heated, and our pool page shows every home with one.
